You know when you would capture the fire flies in a jar. That is kind of what I want to do with all these people taking pictures. So, just so everyone can enjoy the show let’s take 30 seconds and I will make all the faces I am going to make and you can take all the pictures you want.” Ed makes a series of faces. He says “Thank You! Good Night!!! Okay, now lets enjoy the rest of the show okay?”)

(Ed says “Those were some quiet ukulele songs and this ukulele is from 1952 and is made by Gibson. It was the first one they put in pick ups and knobs on. I am only going to turn it up to two because to go any louder would break symphony rules....Welcome Houston, you know I spent a few years around here growing up and some of my first memories are from here. Like my mom cutting my hair and watching it blow away in the wind and then feeling this excruciating pain like my legs were on fire. My legs up to my knees were covered in fire ants. It looked like I had living socks. And then my uncle driving me in a car and us getting caught in a (tornado/windstorm?) and my uncle telling me we are going to be okay but I didn’t believe him. And I have been mining those early memories for material for the rest of my life. So thank you Houston for those first memories of pain and terror.”)

(Ed compares this song to about a relationship to a car. Talking about the excitement of an new car and a new love, “that new car smell...that new love smell” and how a couple have different tasks to keep the car up. Sometimes the car falls into disrepair and you have to get out and hitchhike.) [very paraphrased]

(I did that song because I was asked to do it by Sean Penn for “I Am Sam” and speaking of Sean I am just gonna keep on going into the wild okay?)

(The audience starts shouting requests and general noise. Ed says, “I hear ya, I hear ya. I just ain’t listening. I will listen later okay?”)

(a woman in the audience shouts “can I have a guitar pick?” Ed says, “sure, let me use it first then I will give it to you.” He then checks in with the people in the upper balconies. “How are you guys doing up there? Are you as high as you look?”)

13. Rise

(Ed discusses his injury that only allowed him to play guitar for about 90 seconds before his arm went numb. He is happy that people were able to reschedule and come to the show. He hated postponing the show. The other hard phone call to make was to Glen Hansard who was scheduled to open. When Ed called Glen and said the tour was getting pushed back Ed relays Glen’s response in a dodgy Irish accent, “don’t worry about it. Just tell me when you want me and I’ll fucking be there.” So not only is Glen a great musician about a great friend.” -slightly off mic Ed says “terrible, terrible” referring to his accent and promises Glen he will stick to his Bruce (Springsteen) impersonation.)

14. Long Nights

(“I don’t know what to say about this song so I just won’t say anything”. He starts playing the song and continues, “except it is a true story...It really happened. It probably happened a million times...It is probably happening right now...Probably right in this room...I hope not.)

15. Betterman

(Ed claims he isn’t much of a shopper but “around this time of year you go shopping for other people and sometimes when you are shopping you find something for someone that you think looks pretty good and you end wanting to keep it. This next song is like that. It started off as a song about someone else and ended up being about me. I wish it wasn’t still so relevant to me..”)

16. Off He Goes

(George hands Ed a guitar but there appears to be some issue with it so Ed asks for another one. “Yeah, this one is a little happier to be in Texas)

17. Parting Ways

(Ed says someone gave me a great bottle of wine today and I was just reminded of that song “take a bottle down and pass it around”? Well, this bottle ain’t getting passed around, so thank you very much. He also says “since the band (Pearl Jam) hasn’t been here in like ten years I plan on reporting back to them about you so, Mat turn up the lights so we can see a little, so the band came together through disfunction and we wrote a lot about that and it looks like we all turned out pretty good.”)

(Ed thanks the audience. He compliments and encourages them on their singing noting that it sounds great in this great room. “It feels a little punk rock to play electric ukulele in a symphony hall and I couldn’t have done it without you. This next song took on a new meaning when somebody else did it. They made a video for it and it is really powerful and gave the song a new meaning. I think he heard about it through his son Lukas but I am really proud to have Willie Nelson and Lukas do a version of it.)

19. Just Breathe

(“I know I have told this story before but every time I place this song I want to do it like Willie does, it isn’t even my song anymore he is just so great he does it like this...” Ed sings ‘Just Breathe’ using Willie Nelson's style of phrasing and vocals and then goes right into..)

(while vamping on “I Won’t Back Down” says “I want to dedicate this to my favorite person from Houston. He is no longer with us and I hope you know of him. Bill Hicks, and I am going to borrow this from Tom Petty for him.

(Speaking of Houstonians, one I just met last night. I don’t get to play this song unless I meet a woman who can sing it with me. I could do with with Glen but that ends being a sort of ‘Broke Back Mountain’ situation so let’s have her come up her, my new friend Moji.”

(Ed tells Glen he wants to experiment. He has a new arrangement of the next song. He plays a very fast version of ‘Sleepless Nights’ which causes Glen to laugh. Ed laughingly says “fuck you it’s my show...okay, I have another experiment.”

(Ed mentions his sister is a Houstonian and he wants to dedicate the next song to his sister, not because of the content but because it is a beautiful song)

( Ed says the next song was a request by Billy. He wrote the song for a film and played all the instruments himself but to replicate it he would need to bring so many people on tour his tickets would cost $1100 dollars. He would also need a lot more hotel rooms. All for a song he plays about once a tour and is really an experiment so he is going to play an instrumental version off of his tape machine and sing along.)

(Ed greets the audience. He says it is really great to be in Houston and he will gladly tell the rest of the guys in the band how great it is here. He notes that Pearl Jam has played in Texas 15 times. He says he remembers playing the clubs Unicorn and The Vatican over and over but doesn’t remember the State Fair.)

(Ed recalls the first song he wrote on the Ukulele. He found the ukulele in a drug store and was sitting outside the store waiting for a friend. He was strumming the ukulele when some passersby gave him some change. He thought, “there might be something to this thing..” He also talks about the song a little bit and a “Porno For Pyros” lyric that covers some of the same topic)

(Ed-“This next song is really quite good and very powerful, It is by Chan Marshall also known as Cat Power. It is about, well it is about what would have happened if the woman in ‘Better Man’ had done the right thing.”)

(someone in the audience shouts something I couldn’t make out but Ed responds “Don’t fuck with that guy, that is Dr. George Webb, and not only is he master at handling all of these instruments he also invented anthrax.” Ed says if you don’t like mandolin music this might be a good time to go to the bathroom.” He notes how long the rows are in the theater. (the span the entire floor with no aisles). He thanks the audience for keeping the shouting and the camera flashes to a minimum. “I am an old pro and it doesn’t bother me so much but it lets the rest of the audience enjoy the show.”

(Ed invites Glen Hansard out. He compliments Glen’s set and talks about how blown away he was by Glen’s guest singer Moji (sp). “The song after this gets happier but this one...well, it has hope in it. And that is important. If something good comes along grab it because it doesn’t happen too often.”)

14. Long Nights

(a guy in the audience shouts “Where’s your wine Ed?”. Ed says, “well, you know, I quit drinking and I quit smoking....I mean I just made this decision at about 4 pm so we will see how it goes..” He then talks about while it may look easy, it is difficult to concentrate and remember all these songs and he would feel terrible if the people that paid to come to the shows just got drunk and exhausted Eddie. He talks about his wife and the upcoming song as well as a little three year old girl named Eileen, who listens to Pearl Jam and Eddie Vedder when she goes to bed at night. The next song is for Eileen)

15. Picture In A Frame-(Brennan, Waits)

(Ed-”This song isn’t on the list but this is as close as I get to Lubbock and when I first really started paying attention and trying to learn guitar I listened to a lot of Buddy Holly)

16. Everyday-(Buddy Holly, Norman Petty)

(Ed says he has a nephew here tonight that has never seen him play so he asks the audience to sing along with him so he can impress his nephew. He then messes up the song halfway through and as he tries to get back on track he softly sings “oh, Uncle Ed..”)

(Ed is back on stage and says, “we have a lot of time left but I feel pretty good. I feel like I could just stop and have a drink. Then I was just talking to someone back stage and they said you played Lubbock on Oct 18, 2000. That is why I gotta quit drinking so I remember stuff like this.” Ed also mentions that he has a sister living here in Houston that he loves very much and wants to play this song for her.)

(Ed says he is sometimes asked what is his favorite country to play? “Texas!, nah I’m just kidding..” A woman in the audience shouts Pittsburgh, Ed asks her why and more people begin to shout things. He gets them to quiet down by saying, “I think she is going to say something positive about Pittsburgh so let her talk, I really want to hear this.” She asks “isn’t George from Pittsburgh?” (referring to Ed’s tech). Ed responds, “You mean Dr. George Webb? I thought you were gonna say something positive about Pittsburgh? Oh great, now all the guitars will be out of tune and there will be anthrax on the picks. Now go have another drink on me.” He says “it isn’t the topography or the buildings it is the people that makes the place. One place that has great people is Ireland and to show what I mean let’s get Glen Hansard out here again.”)

He struggles a bit and asks the audience to pick a representative and give him the first line. Once that is accomplished he plays the song)

He says, “Maybe because it is a college but not only are you a good looking group but you look smart as well.” He talks about the football game on Saturday and how Coach Royal would be proud of that first play.” He shows the audience that the stool he is sitting on is a Texas Longhorns stool. He has been using it for years and for all of his solo tours, “So Austin, you are always on my mind....or under my ass, however you want to think about it.” Ed notes that the last few ukulele songs were sad but the next couple are going to be happy just to balance it out.)

(Ed talks about how working with Tim Robbin’s on “Dead Man Walking” lead to meeting Sean Penn, who tried to get Ed to act in a film. Ed declined the acting and eventually Sean asked him to record a song for “I Am Sam”. That lead to writing “Into The Wild” which finally gave Ed the impetus to do solo tours.)

(A person in the crowd is screaming random nonsense. Ed ask the person if they are all right and if their wife brought their medication. Ed notes that the crowd the night before got a little out of hand and while it doesn’t bother him much he feels a responsibility to the others in the audience that might be bothered by it so he is going to try and settle down some of the shouting. He then tells the story about the time he climbed some scaffolding on the Capitol building and got all the way to the top.

(Ed asks the crowd if they know Howard Zinn? They do and Ed goes on to say my friend Douglas Brinkley, a great writer and historian is here tonight and it is a real pleasure to play in front of him tonight)

(Ed notes that the sing language interpreters are not here tonight. He misses them and says they were great. He had a whole list of words he wanted wanted to get them to act out. He explains to the audience members that weren’t here Friday what they were doing. He spells out the word he used repeatedly at the previous show that got so much attention and that the interpreters spelled and mimed Ed mimes the gesture himself while telling the story. “Again, it’s a compliment, it’s not a bad thing....”)

(Eddie invites out Glen Hansard and notes, “you were right, this is a good crowd”. “This song was originally written for the film “Body Of War” about Tomas Young. I have been thinking about him a lot today. (Today is Veterans’ Day)

16. Long Nights

(Some guy in the audience shouts something at Ed. Eddie asks him to repeat himself, when he still can’t make it out he says, “we talked about this before, take the cock out of your mouth and say it again.” The guy says he wants a beer and a joint. Ed says well, I am sure you can get a beer up there and probably find whatever else you need. I would love to help you out but everybody else would have to wait for about ten minutes while I try to get up there...”)

(Ed says, “Now I feel kinda bad, do we have a song called ‘beer and joint’? If not we should totally write one. We could do it on this instrument right here.” He pulls out his Gibson electric Ukulele. He demonstrates how it sounds acoustically and how it sounds through his guitar amps. He then plays..)

18. Loud Uke-(new song) Same as the song played in El Paso [called Les Paul Uke on that set list]. Ed adds a lyric “All I need is a beer and a joint” a reference to the guy in the audience that Ed has been teasing.)

(Ed asks for a person named Dennis to come down. Dennis brought Ed a typewriter. It has a USMC stamp on it. Dennis included a note that says the typewriter belonged to Dennis’ dad who passed away a few years ago. Ed thanks him and says it means the world to him. “That this was given to me on Veteran’s Day isn’t lost on me.” Ed talks about his friends that were in the military or are currently in the military. He goes on to talk about how he is sometimes accused of being anti-soldier because he is against the wars we are in. He says it is exactly the opposite. “It is because I care about the soldiers that I am anti-war. I am pro soldier and I care about them.” He also talks about now that we are not raising money for the presidential campaign we can go back to raising money for various charities that need help like wounded warriors or Sean Penn’s group in Haiti. Let’s look out for our folks here (in the military). It is a travesty that they aren’t taken of.)

(Ed says two of his favorite Texans are here in Austin. One is Keith “Zonk” Moreland here in the audience. He says t”he other Texan is Willie Nelson.” Willie covered my song “Just Breathe’ and if Willie was here I would tell the guy in the back to talk to Willie, he could set him up)

(Ed explains the origin of the wings that sit behind him. He talks about losing Dennis Flemion and how sudden and tragic it was and still is. He is very happy to be able introduce Dennis’ brother and bandmate Jimmy Flemion. Jimmy comes out and is clearly emotional. He thanks Ed for all the nice things he has done for them and The Frogs. Jimmy dedicates the next few songs to Dennis.)
